|
|
PREMIER LEAGUE clubs have been rocked by the news they could soon be limited to just five foreign players in their first team.
FIFA today voted in favour of the "six-plus-five" plan proposed by president Sepp Blatter, which would require clubs to field six homegrown players in their starting XI.
And the moved has been backed by the Football Association, who voted in favour of exploring the rule change.
The restrictions could be in place for the 2012-13 season, although clubs may have to field at least four homegrown players as early as 2010.
Blatter's vision took a step closer to reality after backing at FIFA’s annual congress in Sydney, Australia.
He said: “Inside the congress of FIFA today we had sunshine on different items, important ones.
“Because today we were somewhere in the crossroad between the interests of clubs and national teams, and the congress of FIFA has given very clear indications of where we have to go.
“Together with the chairman of FIFA’s football committee, Franz Beckenbauer, and Michel Platini, we come to this resolution.
“The congress was very happy in a result of overwhelming majority, with 155 votes in favour and five against. It is an overwhelming support to this resolution.
“The FIFA president has asked, together with the UEFA president, to explore - and explore is not to discuss, it’s to go in depth - within the limits of the law.
“The application of such a system would start only at the end of 2010 and we would start progressively with four, five and six.
Why was this ruling changed?Wasn't this the ruling when Leeds played Stugart and they fielded an extra foreign player?
If this ruling came in to place it might give the England team a better chance.

| Don't think they will be able to change rule because of EU laws. Pity though, it would help the English team. It is nice to see a bit of foreign flair but the young lads have to get a chance. Plus British players cost a lot more!!!!!! Why is this?????? |
