Sugar Ray Leonard will use the anniversary of one of his most famous victories to convince Peter Manfredo he has a shot at pulling off the seemingly impossible against Joe Calzaghe on Saturday night.
It was 20 years ago when Leonard audaciously stepped up to the middleweight division to dethrone Marvin Hagler via split decision at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
Despite his dazzling talents Leonard was regarded as a huge underdog against the then-unbeaten Hagler, who was so disgusted by the verdict he walked away from the sport for good.
Now Leonard believes 'Contender' star Manfredo - for whom he is acting as an adviser ahead of the big Millennium Stadium bout - can repeat the feat against 50-1 on favourite Calzaghe.
Leonard said: "I hear people asking Calzaghe who's next and they are all totally overlooking Peter Manfredo. They asked the same things to Hagler before our fight.
"They gave me no shot whatsoever, and I think there is such a parallel it is like deja-vu. I can guarantee Peter will come to fight and he will make it an intriguing contest."
Manfredo's preparations were hit by the loss of his trainer Freddie Roach to prepare Oscar De La Hoya for his upcoming bout against Floyd Mayweather.
But the 26-year-old could hardly have hoped for a better adviser than Leonard, and he insists he is capable of wrecking Calzaghe's hunt for a 20th successful WBO super-middleweight title defence.
Manfredo insisted: "I have no pressure on me. I am going to get booed or whistled, but I think by the end of the night I will have turned the crowd over, like Rocky going to Russia.
"Joe has got all the pressure. He is expected to kill me but I have got a lot of surprises in store for people. I have had the best camp ever, and I believe I am going to shock the world."

Well done Calzaghe.I know the fight was stopped, but Manfredo wasn't fighting back.Probably could have given him a bit longer, but don't think it would have made a difference apart from Manfredo having a few more cuts n bruises

I have watched boxing since I was seven years old , and last nights bill was the worst I ever seen , all the fights IMO, should have never been allowed in the first place , everyone a mismatch , and the poor lads from Canada , had it not being for a good ref could have being serioulsy hurt:-(
Well done JC , and AK , you can only beat the guys put in front of you , bums or not:-)
