One for the leader of another forum.British parents are struggling to understand the way their teenagers communicate with each other on the internet, a report claims.
According to teen website Habbo Hotel, online teenage communities are now almost incomprehensible to parents or those out of touch with teenagers.
It reports that because of the growing prevalence of email, instant messenger and mobile phones, teenagers have developed an online language which is "dynamic and multidimensional", combining a mix of punctuation symbols, abbreviations and emoticons.
Habbo Hotel, a website where teenagers keep in contact with friends through instant messaging, says the online teen language is "dynamic and multidimensional" but uses so many symbols and imagery that to understand it you would need a “pictionary”.
Ashley Harris, Habbo Hotel's UK country manager, said: “Teenagers on Habbo are highly creative and use a kind of four dimensional language made up from words, abbreviations, symbols and the specially created Habbo Altcode emoticons.”
“To adults it reads like a code that cannot be broken. In fact non teenagers can be easily identified by the way they chat in full sentences.”
Examples of this language include: P999 - 'parent alert', LMAO BBS - 'laughing my arse off and will be back soon', IRL - 'In real life' and w/e - 'whatever'.
