Jemal JohnsonWolves striker Jemal Johnson could be poised for a return to Elland Road as Leeds United attempt to resolve their striker crisis.
The 22-year-old forward is one of a number of possible signings being considered by United after the club were forced to rule Leon Constantine out of action for three months.
Constantine has been sidelined by the ankle injury he sustained during United's pre-season campaign and is not expected to be available until the middle of November at the earliest.
The 29-year-old completed a free transfer to Leeds just 10 days ago, agreeing a two-year deal, but his impending absence is likely to force Dennis Wise back into the transfer market.
United's boss also has a slight concern over Tore Andre Flo, who fractured a foot last term, and Wise admitted this week that the Norwegian forward is four weeks away from reaching full fitness.
Flo is expected to be considered for Saturday's League One game against Southend United, but Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol are the only senior strikers available to Wise who are completely free of injury worries.
The uncertain situation could now present Johnson with a second opportunity at Elland Road after the American finished last season on loan with United.
Johnson made only three league starts during almost three months in Yorkshire and struggled to make a serious impact as Leeds headed for relegation from the Championship.
The forward was brought in by Wise with a view to a permanent transfer, but United's boss identified alternatives in the summer. Constantine's injury, however, may encourage him to consider another approach to Molineux.
Johnson remains under contract at Wolves but appears to have no place in Mick McCarthy's plans following the summer arrival of Freddy Eastwood.
McCarthy would be willing to release the striker, but Wolves appear keen to recoup a portion of the undisclosed fee they paid Blackburn last year and it is unclear whether they would agree to a second loan deal.
Leeds are also being linked with Lubomir Michalik, the Slovakian defender who was on loan at Elland Road from Bolton last season, but Wanderers are reluctant to farm out the youngster for another temporary spell.
Wise is aiming to sign two centre-backs before the transfer window closes on August 31 and he is also in urgent need of a second choice goalkeeper.
Casper Ankergren turned out against both Tranmere and Macclesfield without cover among Wise's substitutes. Leeds have already decided
against signing Watford keeper Scott Loach on loan.
United's interest in Motherwell's Alan Martin, who appeared close to a move to Elland Road last week, also seems to be fading
