I wish I could be tidy,
Organised and neat.
Methodical and orderly
Like others that I meet.
But everything is chaos,
Clutter and confusion.
I gather things around me
In disorderly profusion.

I always try to throw clothes out
When they are past their prime.
But end up with them back inside
My wardrobe every time.
That pile of ancient sweaters
In the box behind the door,
I know won’t be recycled till
I’ve worn them just once more.

At the bottom of the staircase
Is a giant plastic sack,
Stuffed full of things for Oxfam,
Which I’ll end up bringing back.
At jumble sales I’m generous
And contribute every time.
Back home I then discover
The things I’ve bought were mine.

I try to discipline myself
To be resolute and bold,
But can’t resist the impulse
To keep everything that’s old.
But, at home there is a threshold
Beyond which I dare not go.
My folks are quite determined
They won’t take my overflow.

So I’ve cunningly concealed my hoards
In places unsuspected.
Hoping that my subterfuge
Will never be detected.
Storage space is limited,
Of that there is no doubt.
But I simply cannot force myself
To throw my old stuff out.
