Defender on loan?Leeds United were today finalising the loan signing of defender Jamie Clapham from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Left-back Clapham, who can also operate as a wide midfielder, has accepted an initial one-month deal with Leeds and is set to be added to Dennis Wise's squad for tomorrow's League One clash with Southend United at Elland Road.
The 31-year-old is out of favour at Molineux despite playing a prominent role in Wolves' pre-season campaign, and Mick McCarthy sanctioned his temporary move to Yorkshire this morning.
Wise has been anxious to improve his defensive options, and also to strengthen the collection of midfielders in his squad, but Clapham's arrival has increased speculation that Eddie Lewis is poised to leave Elland Road.
The American full-back, who has made 95 appearances for Leeds during two full seasons at Elland Road, has been linked with Stoke for the past fortnight, and Clapham's arrival could now signal Lewis' exit.
United assistant boss Gus Poyet, meanwhile, has called for the unanimous support of Leeds United's fans as the club prepared for their first home fixture of the term.
Leeds will raise the curtain on their campaign at Elland Road against Southend tomorrow, and Poyet is anticipating a passionate reception after admitting he and Dennis Wise have reached "a turning point" in their fight to win the affection of United's supporters.
The pair were given a loud ovation after last weekend's 2-1 win over Tranmere, and Poyet said: "We can't say anything to the fans. They can show their point or opinion, but during the 90 minutes I would love them to get behind the team. I'm sure they will – it means a lot to the players.
"I've got the feeling that there will be many supporters inside the stadium, and it'll be great to see all the fans supporting Leeds again.
"There's been a turning point. The fans have seen the club going backwards, to be fair, and it was difficult for them to accept it.
"But they're still here and we know that they love the club. As soon as you show them that you really care for the team and for the club, they're with you."
