Council tax risesCouncil tax bills will soon be landing on millions of doormats across the country - and we should steel ourselves for above-inflation increases of about 4%. The latest rises will take the typical bill next year to £1,145 - up from the average bill of £564 when Labour came to power in 1997.
It all means that over the past decade, the average council tax bill has ballooned by about 90%, according to Halifax research. The figure is much higher than the 31% rise in the headline rate of inflation or the 51% growth in average earnings.
