animal loverThere was a 77% rise in the number of neglected animals the RSPCA dealt with last year, the charity said.
Inspectors saw 94,130 animals between January 1 and December 31 2005 whose basic needs for food, water, shelter and medical treatment were not being met.
They included 23,733 dogs, 22,645 farm animals and 11,396 small domestic animals.
Of the total 1,023,198 animals seen during the period, 25,784 did not have access to water, up 104% on 2003-2004, 34,337 were in pain or had an injury

or disease, up 79%, and 33,308 did not live in a clean environment, up 68%.
Among the worst cases of ill-treatment were a cat who was killed in a washing machine, a puppy who was kicked to death and two dogs who had their throats cut.
Over the past year there has been a 6% rise in the number of complaints the charity investigated, a 13% rise in the number of defendants convicted and a 20% rise in the number of convictions secured. A total of 28 people were given jail terms.
Jackie Ballard, RSPCA director general, said: "2005 will go down as one of the most violent towards animals.
"Sadly, despite our best efforts, there are those who continue to ignore our messages and treat animals with brute force instead of compassion.
"The cases highlighted show why the RSPCA will continue to prosecute those who feel they are doing nothing wrong when harming an animal.
"On a more positive note, it is heartening to see how many of these cruelty victims enjoy new and happy lives once they are re-homed by our dedicated staff up and down the country. The pleasure these animals give their new owners shows that the vast majority of people appreciate the important part a pet plays in the family."

Was on the news down here and radio 2 today mate. Sick fuckers who mistreat animals should be horsewhipped to within an inch of their lives, and then fed to hungry sharks.
