The much-hyped wedding of footballer Ashley Cole to Cheryl Tweedy was shrouded in mystery, after their supposed venue said preparations there had been a bluff.

Staff at Highclere Castle said they had agreed to take part in a deliberate charade to keep journalists away from the self-styled showbiz wedding of the year which has been sold exclusively to a magazine.

A security guard, who did not want to be named, said that the couple were originally booked to get married at the spectacular Berkshire stately home.

But when word got out, Ashley Cole asked the Earl of Carnarvon, whose family seat the country house is, not to deny the rumours.

Preparations for a large corporate bash that was held in the grounds last night further fuelled the rumours and it was widely reported that the wedding was taking place at the castle.

The guard said: "They were getting married here but they cancelled it months ago. We've got no idea where it is now."

The Girls Aloud singer and the England and Arsenal defender have signed an exclusive deal with OK! magazine said to be netting £1 million, so details of the ceremony and reception were tightly guarded.

But journalists at the castle on Friday and Saturday, expecting high profile security and frantic last-minute preparations, were disappointed.

Instead they found the gates to the grounds wide open and the marquee being dismantled. Signs directing guests for a Hilton Hotel corporate party lay discarded on the ground.

And all was quiet at the castle, which is set in stunning rolling countryside. Its extensive sunlit lawns were empty and its doors bolted shut.
