Jonny Howson has agreed the terms of a new contract which will keep him at Leeds until at least 2011.
Jonny Howson was quick to speak of his delight after pledging his future to Leeds United with a new improved contract.
The 20-year-old has signed a deal which ties him to the club until 2011 at the earliest and includes a provision to automatically extend the agreement until 2012 if the club is promoted to the Championship.
"I'm very happy," said Jonny. "I wanted to sign when it was right for me and the club - which it is - and it's been done."
Jonny figured prominently in the second half of the season for United and the new deal is seen as just rewards for the homegrown youngster's development as a player.
"It's nice, but there's other players around who help you and I'd like to thank them for that," he said.
"I remember when I signed my last contract I wasn't playing regularly, but since Gary came in I've played a lot more.
"I knew I was capable of doing a good job, but it was just getting a run of performances.
"Dennis had his way of developing me and I don't have a problem with that, and Gary played me a bit more so thanks to him."
Jonny is now hoping to play a part in spearheading United's promotion bid from League One next season.
After missing out in the Play-Off final last term, automatic promotion back to the Championship is the main aim now.
"Everyone's looking upwards at the club," said Jonny. "I think we've got to get promoted and back to where should be.
"I know we have gone on about points but if it hadn't have been for that deduction last season we would have gone up.
"Thats gone now though. It's a new season and I'm sure everyone will come back thinking about promotion.
"Everyone believes we are going somewhere."
The disappointing end to last season was summed up by Jonny after the Wembley defeat at the hands of Doncaster when, like almost 50,000 United fans, he fought back the tears at the final whistle.
"There's no point in dwelling on the past because you can't change it," he added.
"We have to look to next season now. Yes it was disappointing. Everyone involved was disappointed, but we have to look to the coming season.
"Just to think how disappointing it was could drive us on. This season will be more a case of doing what we could have done and not being disappointed."
Nice one Jonny - true Leeds
