Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore has admitted plans for a 39th match could be scrapped after being grilled by MPs at Westminster yesterday.

Scudamore said for the first time an 'international round' of matches will have to be shelved if opposed by world governing body FIFA and the Football Association.

But he insisted the idea is 'not a dead duck'. The House of Commons culture, media and sport committee went as far as to call the concept 'daft', 'barmy' and 'bent'.

But Scudamore, who hopes to fly to Zurich next week to persuade FIFA boss Sepp Blatter of the benefits of the plan, said: 'Clearly we are not going to take this forward if it in any way does not meet with some form of acquiescence from FIFA.

'Certainly the FA and Football League will have to be comfortable with whatever move and whatever direction we take. If it's deemed not to be worth it we will think again about our global expansion.'

But he claimed: 'It's certainly not a dead duck – it has only just started and we have only had ten days of a year-long consultation process.'

Scudamore will meet FA counterpart Brian Barwick today, ahead of an FA board meeting to discuss the plans tomorrow.
