Leeds' Kevin Nicholls could make a surprise return to action against Wolves at Elland Road on Sunday.

The 27-year-old midfielder has made a quicker-than-expected recovery from knee ligament damage sustained in July in his first training session for Leeds following his summer switch from Luton.

And manager Kevin Blackwell will be further boosted by last week's arrival of Jonathan Douglas on a permanent switch from Blackburn.

Douglas is expected to start as a replacement for Shaun Derry, who is recovering from a hernia operation, while Blackwell must decide whether to stick with Ian Westlake and Seb Carole in midfield or throw Nicholls straight into his starting line-up.

Blackwell also faces a dilemma over his goalkeepers with fit-again Neil Sullivan vying with on-loan Tony Warner for a starting place.

Steve Stone (hernia) is expected to return to full training next week and Geoff Horsfield sits out the last match of his suspension, but David Healy and Matthew Kilgallon returned unscathed from international duty.

Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray is expected to have recovered from knee problems in time to play.

The Wanderers shot-stopper jarred the joint late in the 1-0 home victory over Luton last time out, but after a fortnight's rest he should be fit to feature against the Whites.

Kevin O'Connor is in contention after bouncing back from a combination of groin and hamstring problems, while striker Jay Bothroyd has recovered from a calf niggle.

But the game is likely to come too soon for Guilherme Finkler (groin) who has so far been restricted to friendly action this season, and Jackie McNamara remains sidelined by a hip injury.

A groin strain rules out Lewis Gobern and Gabor Gyepes has yet to return after cruciate knee ligament surgery.
