Fawlty Towers has been voted the most iconic television comedy show of all time by British viewers.

Almost a third of those polled voted for the sitcom, starring John Cleese as hotel manager from hell Basil Fawlty.

Only 12 episodes were made of the show, which beat Blackadder's 26 per cent of the vote, and Only Fools And Horses, which had 16 per cent.

Basil was also crowned Britain's favourite male television character, followed by Cockney wheeler-dealer Del Boy, who won 23 per cent of the votes.

Trotter brothers Del Boy and Rodney were named most iconic screen duo in British television history, beating The Two Ronnies (29 per cent) and Basil and Sybil Fawlty (17 per cent).

Inspector Morse was the top of the list as the drama viewers would most like to return to screens, followed by Cold Feet and Prime Suspect.

Dawn French's portrayal of the Rev Geraldine Granger in The Vicar Of Dibley was the most popular female television character, ahead of Absolutely Fabulous's Patsy Stone on 22 per cent and The Good Life's Barbara Good, who received 15 per cent.

I think the most iconic comedy show has to be Fools and Horses, but i do enjoy The Vicar of Dibley aswell. There didnt seem to be many series of The vicar made which is a real shame.
