The mother of Shannon Matthews is reported to have been arrested in connection with the alleged kidnap of her daughter.

West Yorkshire Police would only say a 32-year-old woman was arrested in Dewsbury on Sunday night on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and is being questioned at a West Yorkshire police station.

Reports say the woman arrested is Shannon's mother, Karen Matthews, 32.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Police investigating the alleged abduction of a nine-year-old girl have arrested a 32-year-old woman in Dewsbury on suspicion of perverting the course of justice." The spokesman said no further details concerning the woman's arrest were expected to be released until later.

The woman's arrest comes as it was revealed that Michael Donovan, who has been charged with Shannon's kidnap and imprisonment, slit his wrists while on remand at Leeds Prison.

Donovan, formerly known as Paul Drake, of Lidgate Gardens, Batley Carr, was arrested on March 14 after Shannon was found at his flat. The 39-year-old is the uncle of Shannon's stepfather, Craig Meehan, 22.

He was in custody at the time awaiting trial, provisionally set for November at Leeds Crown Court. The incident reportedly happened on Saturday night and he was taken to hospital before being returned to prison.

Shannon went missing in Dewsbury on February 19 and was discovered in the base of a bed at an address just one mile from her home, after a dramatic 24-day police search.

Not surprised after seeing the C4 documentary. She didn't seem bothered her daughter was missing. I think it was a ll a scam to get some money - hopefully that and not anything more sinister after what was found on the stepdads computer.

But I look at it this way

Mother - 32 years old - seven kids to five dads or summat like that
Stepdad - 22 years old - been with Mother since he was 17?

Stepdads uncle - kidnapper? Stepdads Mother and Sister arrested too?

They make the cast of Shameless look like decent folk.

The stepdad also had a strange passing resemblance to Alan Smith - wearing his Scum shirt when appearing in court too - should give him life

Everything seems really dodgy with this case.
Thank the lord that Shannon is now safe and i just hope that nothing has happened to her that will scar her for life

The poor kid would probably be better off in care/with foster parents - she shouldn't have been in a position to go missing at that age anyway -not if she was properly cared for.

Karen Matthews, 32, was arrested in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, on Sunday night on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

Police sources said detectives had been granted a superintendent's extension to allow further questioning.

According to reports, Mrs Matthews was arrested after she told a police family liaison officer she had known where Shannon was all along.

Mrs Matthews is the fourth family member to be arrested in connection with the nine-year-old's disappearance on February 19.

Karen Matthews, 32, will appear before magistrates in Dewsbury charged with perverting the course of justice and child neglect.
