IT’S 1981. Gene’s moved from Manchester to London to help those soft southerners clear the streets of scum.
And, of course, he’s got a new sidekick – feisty DI Alex Drake – after Sam Tyler bought the farm in Life On Mars.
So is it any good?
Of course it is.
Keeley Hawes’ DI Drake is not the best-drawn character in British drama history.
But she is a darn sight easier on the eye than her pint-sized predecessor John Simm.
She arrives in 1981 dressed as a “prozzie,” as Gene Hunt says, after being shot in the head in 2008.
Later, she suggests her predicament is all “a subconscious construct brought on by severe cranial trauma”.
Oh, and she also appears to know all about Gene from studying Sam Tyler.
She’s a psychological profiler back in 2008, you see. It turns out she’s an undercover cop, who Gene and Co have been expecting.
She “wakes” from her time travel smack-bang in the middle of a drugs bust, a caper which eventually involves a speedboat and an Uzi.
Miami Vice, eat your heart out!
She’s soon taken under Gene’s wing and is accepted within the ranks of his macho crime-busting team.
Their banter is all typically unPC and Gene wastes no time in nicknaming DI Drake “Bolly Knickers”.
But despite all that it’s not long before he suddenly realises he has a genuine soft spot for the new arrival.
This simmering passion looks set to be a theme of the series – but if that doesn’t light your fire, you could always just sit back and enjoy the soundtrack.
The Stranglers, Ultravox, Bowie, Joe Dolce . . . now that’s what I call 1981.
