FORMER Leeds United defender David Wetherall will hang up his boots in May – and end his 19-year playing career.
The Bradford City centre-half, 37 next month, will quit playing to join the coaching staff at the Coral Windows Stadium.

Chemistry graduate Wetherall, who famously scored the goal that secured the Bantams' Premiership safety against Liverpool in May 2000, switched across West Yorkshire to the Bantams from Elland Road for £1.4m in 1999.

Howard Wilkinson had brought him to Leeds from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 1991 and he played over 200 league games for the Whites.

The boyhood Leeds fan did have a playing contract with Bradford until 2010, but with a clause inserted into the deal to allow him to end his playing days when he saw fit.

Wetherall, a virtual ever-present this term, said: "I was just beginning to feel frustrated with the things I can't do anymore that I used to be able to do.

"Certainly next season that would only increase.

"I'm not one of those people who can kid themselves they can go on forever – you can't.

"I want to look back and be able to say yes, I did my best and did the best with what I had."

Good luck to David in whatever he decides to do.
He served Leeds well and was always proud to do so

Scored the goal that kept Bradford in the Premier League.  This was also the goal that meant Leeds qualified for the Champions League - if it had not been for that would we have gone on the spending spree?  Would we still be a Prem side??  lol who cares - Weatherall scored the winner against the scum in Setember 1997 - the day Roy 'epitome of scum' Keane snapped his cruciate - that was one of the best days I ever had.  Weatherall - legend.

Oh yes, such sweet sweet justice that got served that day against one of the biggest thugs the game has ever known, if he wasn't a scum player he'd have been banned 10 times over
