i have just had a discussion with a work colleague regarding trick or treating.

i think it is just a bit of fun but she wont let her kids join in because she classes it as a form of begging.

It's begging!
Same as penny for the guy is begging!

They don't come to our house any more,
a few years ago a gang of kids knocked on the door
"Trick or treat" they says
"Trick" says I and covered 'em in flour!

Commercialised humbug...bhah...

We had the same discussion at work earlier, weirdly enough. Me, Sarah, Elle and a few others had mothers that were the same, and wouldn't let us go, but all agree it's just a bit of fun and would never stop our kids doing it.

It is worse than begging. It is American begging!

They never come round carol singing do they?

No if they come to my house it is a lecture not a trick or a treat.

Penny for a guy is supposed to be for children (who produce the best guy) to buy things for their bonfire like apples or fireworks, as money for such things would not have been readily available to children.

As for Halloween, I hate they way more and more American stuff ends up in our lives, it will be start spangled banners next...
