Relatives of Shannon Matthews' stepfather Craig Meehan have been arrested by police probing the 24 day disappearance of the Dewsbury youngster.
Alice Meehan, Craig's mother, and Amanda Hyett, Craig's sister, turned up at unnamed, local police stations by prior arrangement during the morning.
Alice, 49, was arrested of suspicion of attempting to prevert the course of justice, while Amanda was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
The dramatic development came less than 24 hours after Shannon's stepfather, 22-year-old Craig Meehan, had a
ppeared in court charged with 11 specimen charges of possessing child porn images on two computers. The supermarket fishmonger was remanded in custody for his own safety, by Dewsbury magistrates.
The move to arrest the two women from Dewsbury area is part of the police effort to establish exactly what happened to Shannon during the 24 days she was missing - and whether there was any cover-up to hide vital information from police.
Nine-year-old Shannon disappeared on February 19. Twenty four days later, on March 14, police officers found Shannon hidden in the base of a bed in a flat in Lidgate Gardens, Batley Carr.
The flat is the home of Craig Meehan's uncle, Michael Donovan - Alice Meehan's brother.
Donovan, 39, is charged with the kidnap and imprisonment of Shannon. He is remanded in custody and his trial has been provisionally set for November 11 at Leeds.
