BRITAIN'S biggest brewer, Scottish & Newcastle, yesterday warned “substantial” price increases were needed to combat a steep rise in raw material costs.

The group said it would combine price rises, estimated by analysts at 5 per cent on a pint of beer, with cost cuts as it forecast input costs would soar 8.5 per cent this year.

Chief executive John Dunsmore issued the warning as annual results sales and profits in the UK were hit by wet weather and the smoking ban.

The group, which last month agreed to a £7.9billion joint takeover by Carlsberg of Denmark and Heineken of Holland, saw UK profits fall 8 per cent to £213million.

£213 Mill profits????My heart bleeds for them

Maybe it'll mean 13 year old kids can't afford it anymore. That'd be a shame!

Won't bother me to be honest. The bars in the centre of Leeds have high enough prices already, and I don't tend to drink at home often. When I do it's usually JD, and that shouldn't be effected. I'd have a minimum on prices throughout the country, because in my experience, all the arseholes are attracted by cheap beer. You go to the more expensive areas and very rarely see any trouble.

Having said that, there's exceptions to the rules. Student areas are usually ok, and football stadiums have ridiculous prices yet attract hooligans. Ahh... **** it, who cares? lol

Supermarket giant Tesco is to urge the Government to introduce a law banning the sale of cut-price alcohol.

A spokesman for the firm confirmed a report in The Daily Telegraph that it now supported legislation to ensure "responsible pricing" of alcohol and alcohol promotions.

The move comes amid widespread concern about the problems of binge-drinking and alcohol-fuelled crime and disorder.

The supermarkets have faced criticism for selling alcohol at heavily reduced prices - sometimes below the wholesale cost - as a "loss leader".

Tesco argues that the issue can only be dealt with through Government action as the supermarkets are barred by competition laws from taking action together to raise prices, while customers would simply go elsewhere if they acted unilaterally.

Lucy Neville-Rolfe, an executive director, said "Supermarkets do sell a lot of alcohol and we accept that we have a role to play in addressing the problem of anti-social drinking.

"Competition law prevents businesses discussing anything to do with price with each other and imposes severe penalties on anyone who breaches it.

"The only safe solution is for the Government to initiate and lead those discussions and to bring forward legislative proposals which Tesco and others in our industry can support."
