In an earlier thread , coventry will do sumat this season , me tinks they might just prove me right.

Gary McSheffrey underlined his growing reputation by scoring the winner in Coventry's 2-1 victory over Sunderland in Niall Quinn's first match as Black Cats boss.

McSheffrey rattled in 17 goals last season and has been the subject of transfer speculation all summer with Coca-Cola Championship rivals Birmingham having made a fourth bid for the 23-year-old.

McSheffrey took his place in the line-up after the Sky Blues successfully appealed against the red card he received in the pre-season friendly against Boavista.

He grabbed the winner with 12 minutes left. Coventry caught Sunderland napping in defence and McSheffrey took advantage to rifle the ball into the net with the help of a deflection.

Trinidad and Tobago international Stern John had hauled Coventry level seven minutes earlier, the striker curling home an excellent 18-yard effort via the underside of the crossbar.

It secured a fine come-from-behind victory after Daryl Murphy had opened the scoring for the Black Cats, under the guidance of Quinn for the first time, in the 52nd minute.

The day's other game finished 2-2 where veteran striker Paul Peschisolido scored an injury time equaliser for Derby and deny Southampton manager George Burley all three points on his return to Pride Park.

The much-travelled 35-year-old Canadian stepped off the substitutes' bench to steer a low drive into the bottom corner with time running out.

Quick-fire goals from Gareth Bale and Bradley Wright-Phillips had looked like making it a happy return for Burley as Saints came from behind to overturn a 2-1 deficit in the second half.

Burley, in charge of the Rams between March 2003 and June 2005 before resigning his position, was heading for defeat against his former club after Seth Johnson had given Derby the half-time advantage.

But the south coast side emerged from the interval with renewed vigour, hitting the Rams with two goals in eight minutes after a period of sustained pressure.
