Insurance magnate John Charman has been ordered by the High Court to pay his former wife a total of ?48m in what is believed to be the biggest divorce award in legal history. Mr Charman said he would appeal against the ruling, which was made in private last week in the Family Division of the High Court. The decision has only now been made public.
Mr Justice Coleridge, sitting in London, last week awarded Beverley Charman the sum in her divorce settlement.

awarded to a wife in the English divorce courts on a contested basis.
In a statement issued by Mr Charman and his solicitors, he said he believed the award was "unfair and unreasonable".
The statement revealed that Mr Justice Coleridge had awarded Mrs Charman a total sum of £48m, which includes £8m of assets already in her name.
He ordered Mr Charman to pay a lump sum of £40m.
In percentage terms, the judge held this to be just under 37% of the assets which he found amounted to just over £131m, including trust assets.
Mr Charman said in his statement: "This judgment is poor and blatantly discriminatory. The size of the award is grotesque and unfair.
"By any reasonable standards this is an extraordinary decision. I will appeal this decision. I made a fair and open offer to my wife of £20m, which would be impossible for any reasonable person to spend in their lifetime."
Mr and Mrs Charman, who are now both in their 50s, were married in 1976, when neither had significant resources. They lived in Sevenoaks, Kent, and had two children.
Mrs Charman built up her own wealth on the insurance markets in the City. She issued a divorce petition in June 2004 against her husband, who now lives in Bermuda.
