From joining Leeds in early March, Freedman almost single handedly reversed United’s season around. From looking a mediocre side in the division to one of the best, Freedman was at the heart of it and turned himself into a fans’ favourite, and now it’s time to say goodbye.

Freedman joined on loan at Elland Road after initially turning down the chance to join Leeds until the end of the season. The 6th March 2008 proved to be one of the most decisive moments in United’s season as the former Scottish international performed a U-turn to join Leeds’ fight for promotion.

Things appeared to be stale at Elland Road as Leeds’ form was pretty poor. Only the week before did Gary McAllister record his first win as Leeds boss in a 1-0 win over Swindon Town.

Freedman made his Leeds debut from the bench as United sunk Bournemouth 2-0; Dougie came on as a substitute for Neil Kilkenny on the 70th minute.

Dougie from then on in became an integral part of the front line as he formed a formidable partnership with other Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford. Leeds’ form started to pick up and Freedman was at the forefront of it contributing 6 goals from 14 appearances, 2 of which from the bench by the end of the regular season and he also won the April Player of the Month award.

Freedman also was the assist for both Johnny Howson’s goals at Brunton Park in the second leg of the Play Off semi final which sent United to Wembley for the first time in 12 years.
