Singer Boy George begins five days sweeping the streets of New York, as he carries out his community service sentence for wasting police time.

The flamboyant former Culture Club frontman will be issued with a shovel, broom, plastic bags and gloves when he turns up for work.

He and a group of fellow litter-pickers also doing community service will then be driven from the headquarters of the sanitation department's District 3 to their patch, which could be in the tourist-filled streets of Chinatown

or Little Italy.
Nolita and parts of the trendy Lower East Side are also possible locations for the eight-hour shift, which will see the singer - real name George O'Dowd - sweating it out in temperatures of up to 30C.

"This is the epitome of community service. It's not like he's going to be working in an air-conditioned office." sanitation department spokesman Vito Turso told the New York Daily News.

The sentence stems from an incident in October when O'Dowd called police to his Little Italy apartment and ended up being arrested when officers found a small amount of cocaine there.

In March he admitted false reporting of an incident under a plea bargain which saw a cocaine possession charge dropped, sparing him the possibility of a prison term. Instead he was handed a 1,000-dollar (£540) fine and the community service and was also ordered to go on a drug rehabilitation programme.

But three months later the 1980s star failed to turn up for a court hearing and Judge Anthony Ferrara complained angrily that he had not yet paid the fine or a 160-dollar (£90) surcharge, nor signed up for the community service.

He also ridiculed O'Dowd's lawyer's proposals for fulfilling the requirement, which included helping teenagers make a public service announcement, holding a fashion and makeup workshop, and putting on a DJ show to raise money for Aids projects.

The musician, whose hits include Karma Chameleon and Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?, said he was untroubled by the menial nature of his allotted task."I don't care about doing cleaning up. My mum was a cleaner. I've always been a scrubber," he added

He deserved more than sweeping a few streets me tinks.
